Why the 20-Hour Service Matters for Your Yamaha Outboard

Why Is the 20-Hour Service So Important?

One of the most common mistakes new outboard owners make is skipping—or putting off—their 20-hour service. The engine is still brand new, so it's easy to think, "It only has 20 hours on it. It can wait." But this is actually one of the most important services your outboard will ever have.

When your Yamaha is assembled at the factory, special assembly lubricants are used to protect the engine during manufacturing and those first few moments of operation. Then, as you begin using the motor, all of the internal moving parts start wearing into each other exactly the way they were designed to. This process is completely normal and is what allows the piston rings, bearings, and other internal components to seat properly.

As those parts break in, they create tiny metal particles that are carried away by the engine oil. That's exactly what the oil is supposed to do—but you don't want those particles continuing to circulate through the engine any longer than necessary.

That's why the 20-hour service includes changing the engine oil and oil filter. You're removing the break-in oil, the assembly lubricants that have done their job, and the fine metal particles created during those first hours of operation.

The same idea applies to your lower unit. The gears inside the lower unit are also breaking in during those first hours on the water. As the gears mesh together and establish their wear pattern, they also create fine metal particles in the gear lube. Replacing the lower unit oil at the 20-hour service removes those particles and gives the gears a fresh start for years of dependable operation.

When you think about it, spending a little time and money on your first service is a small investment compared to the cost of replacing or rebuilding an outboard. The break-in period only happens once, and completing the 20-hour service is one of the best ways to help protect your investment from day one.
