What I Learned About Boat Zincs

Working in the marine industry means I'm constantly learning something new. This week it was zincs.

I've known they were important for years. I've sold them, seen them on boats, heard customers talk about replacing them. But honestly? I never really understood what they were doing other than "protecting something expensive."

After probably driving our mechanic a little crazy with questions, I finally got it.

Zincs are basically taking the hit for the rest of your boat.

They're designed to corrode before your lower unit, propeller shaft, trim tabs, and other underwater metal does. Instead of corrosion attacking those expensive parts, it attacks the zinc first. That part made sense.

What I didn't know was that zincs can also flag when something else is going on.

Excessive corrosion isn't always just normal wear. Sometimes it means stray electrical current is in the water — from dock power, a nearby boat, or something on your own boat.

And where the corrosion appears can help narrow it down. If you have zinc bars mounted underneath and one side is wearing noticeably faster than the other, that can point toward where the electrical activity is coming from. Not a guarantee, but a clue.

Most of us look at a zinc, think "yep, corroded," and move on. I get it — that was me.

But the condition of your zincs tells you what's going on below the waterline. They're not just protecting the boat. They're giving you information.

Expensive repairs rarely show up out of nowhere. Usually there are signs. Sometimes those signs are your zincs. The more you know your boat and what's normal, the easier it gets to catch something early.

I'm definitely still learning. But this one felt worth passing along.
